Mould and stains starting to appear in your bathroom? Want to clean the bathroom but don’t want to use harsh chemicals? There are many alternatives for removing hard bathroom stains and not all of them include harsh chemical products. You can clean your bathroom chemical free with items that are commonly found in your home or even get a professional cleaner to get your job done. Here’s how:

What are the different types of chemical-free options?

cleaning the toilet with pink gloves

Built up soap scum

If your shower screen has built up soap scum and product stains, then it's best that you whip up a water and vinegar solution to remove the stain organically. To make the solution just add in a 50/50 ratio of vinegar to water and you’ll have a stubborn glass stain remover. Start by spraying some of the solution directly over the screen and leave for 15 minutes. Once the time's up, gently rub stains free in a circular motion to remove them thoroughly. This solution works best for shiny surfaces such as glass and tiles.

cleaning bathroom with baking soda

Use baking soda

A paste consisting of baking soda and distilled water is a good, homemade remedy for washing all sinks and taps in the bathroom. Using a toothbrush makes it easy to reach the challenging places and gives a good 360 degree reach for places especially behind the back of the sink. If the faucet and heads of the tap are removed, they can be cleaned and soaked overnight in a solution of pure white vinegar to remove typical pores stains.

Clean mirrors using vinegar

Prepare a mixture with equal parts of water and white vinegar, and add it to a spray bottle. The spray will be used without any toxic substances for washing all mirrors in the bathroom. Vinegar and water solution adds a natural lustre to the glass surface and makes it look clean and shiny.

Tile and grout stains

For hard to remove tile and grout stains, you’ll need -

  • ½ cup of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of washing soda
  • 2 tablespoons of borax
  • 3 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid

Mix ingredients in an old bucket and wipe the solution over the tiled area. Let the mixture sit for at least 30 minutes and make sure no children or family pets can access the area. After the time has passed, grab a scrub brush and clean the area until stains are free.

Spray bottle with vinegar

All-purpose solution

For an all-purpose cleaner, combine 1 cup of white vinegar, 2 cups of water, 1 tablespoon castile soap and 3-4 drops essential oil of your choice into a sprayer bottle and you’ll have an antibacterial all-purpose organic cleaner. This solution is best for toilets, glass, sinks, tubs – you name it. All you need to do is spray the solution over the stains and voila! Plus, the essential oil within your solution will leave your room smelling fresh.

The white vinegar in this solution serves as an antibacterial agent which also prevents and removes mould while the natural oil will act as a lubricant so that you can wipe the area with ease. Keep the proportion of the solution as prescribed, as too much or too little of any of the ingredients might not give the desired effect.

Buy organic cleaning solutions

It is advisable to use organic and biodegradable organic cleaning solutions, in case you don’t have time to create your own cleaning solution at home. However, you should know that a lot of manufacturers claim that their solutions are non-toxic and organic in the name of marketing in the name of trade security, and do not reveal the actual ingredients being used in the product. You should avoid such chemicals and not buy from such manufacturers.

Polishing taps and fixtures with vinegar

Polish bathroom fixtures with vinegar

The final step toward a smooth, shiny bathroom is to polish the fixtures. Although trendy tapware like brass and matte black may have their moment in the spotlight, for most of us chrome is the normal. Make chrome taps and pipes look vibrant with vinegar.

Combine one part of vinegar on a microfibre cloth to two parts of water, then buff off dirt, stains then soap residue. If you like to add a refreshing scent when you shine to your toilet, apply a few drops of eucalyptus, peppermint or tea-tree oil to it.

Floor scrubber machine

If you want more than just household products, then another great way of removing stains is with a pressurised water machine. This method is used mostly on tiled or concrete floors. Pressurised water can most definitely get rid of many types of bathroom stains and is relatively safer as it’s just plain H2O. To apply this, you will need a portable water pressuriser.
