As the warm summer season comes round the corner, you will yearn for a functional air conditioner. A broken air conditioner during summer can be devastating. This is when a lot of people hunt for professional service providers, who can get the device up and running. Air conditioners that remain idle for several months will require maintenance.

#1 Filters
First of all, you should replace or clean the air conditioner’s filters. This is a very important step during periodic air conditioning maintenance. If the filters are blocked, your AC will become can become up to 15 percent less efficient. As a result, dust will circulate in your home. Moreover, inefficient air conditioners can increase your energy bills.

#2 Condenser Coils
Secondly, you should clean the air conditioner’s condenser coils. These coils are located outside the main unit. During winter, you should protect the condenser using a cover. This will prevent the accumulation of excess debris. Clogged coils and condensers with debris will reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner.

#3 The Drain
This component of the air conditioner keeps the humidity of your room in check. Deposits of leaves, debris and dust in the condenser drain should be removed. Clogged drains will inhibit your unit from reducing humidity.

#4 The Coolant Lines
Moving on, you should make sure the coolant lines are working. Just like refrigerators and other cooling devices, air conditioners have coolant lines. These lines should be protected using foam. The right kind of foam will insulate the entire device and prevent energy loss. If you see spots without proper insulation, you should replace them.

From time to time, your air conditioner will need more than regular cleaning. This is when you should consider hiring a professional. A technician should conduct the following checks;

  • Check for leaks
  • Check seals
  • Capture refrigerant (do not release into atmosphere)
  • Ensure the system has the correct amount of refrigerant
  • Ensure heating and cooling can not operate simultaneously
  • Inspect electrical components
  • Tighten components
  • Check for wear and tear
  • Oil motors and belts
  • Check thermostat accuracy
